Overview

Our Faculty of Life Sciences has a global reputation for research. Recognised as an international site of excellence in terms of research power and importance, and named in the top three UK Biology groupings in the 2008 RAE, we use cross-disciplinary approaches to address major biological problems of global significance.

Now recruiting...

FLS is looking to appoint to around a dozen chair positions and five lectureships within the following general themes and priority areas. Applicants whose research and teaching interests align with the priority areas will be particularly welcome, but we encourage applications from individuals with other interests, provided they are relevant to one or more themes. Some themes and priority areas are cross-Faculty and, where relevant, applications will therefore be co-ordinated.

A staff perspective...

Prof Mike White

Mike White - Professor of Systems Biology

“I wanted to find a University committed to the science I do, and to establish new collaborations and research directions. Manchester was ideal because of the enormous depth in biological research and interdisciplinary science. Few universities would have been able to provide the specialist facilities that my research required. Staff in Manchester worked really hard to find working solutions that could meet our requirements. The estates team were efficient and pro-active. I found people in Manchester to be welcoming, professional and friendly. Manchester is a vibrant and friendly City with a world-class University. I have been struck by the positive and optimistic attitude of staff at all levels and by the fairness and honesty with which people treat each other.”

Science for life

Smith Lecture Theatre

Our students benefit from modern facilities, innovative teaching techniques and the chance to be taught by leaders across the breadth of the life sciences. Through a single school, single faculty structure, we promote international excellence in education by removing barriers to collaboration and communication. We also recognise the potential impact we have on our environment and communities, and are dedicated to maximising the effects of our work in this area.

Students and staff

Students

Manchester Life Sciences courses achieved excellent results in the National Student Survey 2011 with many achieving 100% for satisfaction, including Pharmacology, Biomedical Sciences and Zoology.

Our students and staff numbers remain buoyant too, with around 2,000 undergraduate students, 375 postgraduate students, 230 academic staff members and 200 people in our professional support team.
