The staff?
“I loved being a student at Manchester, my faculty- Dr Anil Day, Dr Maggy Fostier, Prof Andrew Doig and Dr Martin Henery - all of them were fabulous and always readily approachable. It was truly a pleasure being taught by them. Besides this, I also had very friendly and helpful colleagues in my research lab.”
Parul Gupta – MSc Biotechnology and Enterprise
“I found the atmosphere very welcoming – there was a good sense of being part of an academic community, and I felt we were encouraged to debate and challenge established ideas. It helped that the MSc group was much smaller than I was used to – only around ten students, compared to more than a hundred in a year during my BSc.”
Melissa Smith – MSc History of Science Technoogy and Medicine
The projects?
“I certainly enjoyed the research half of the course the most. My time working with Prof. Kathryn Else and her team was fantastic. This experience helped me decided that a PhD was the road I wanted to continue down and really left me with a great impression of what it was like to work with a fantastic research team.”
Melissa Mariani – MSc Immunology and Immunogenetics
“My MSc final project was conducted in collaboration with a cancer research group in Liverpool, aimed at facilitating targeted DNA sequencing, i.e. sequencing of particular regions of the genome (in this case gene regions that previously had been identified as being important for breast cancer). This gave me an opportunity to work together with researchers outside of the university on a "real" project that had real-world value.”
Martin Gerner – MSC Bioinformatics and Systems Biology
The social life?
“Manchester is not an urban jungle like London where you can get lost easily and it is also not a small town where there isn’t much to do. Manchester is truly a cosmopolitan place which has elements of a big and busy city and at the same time there is also a peaceful side to it.”
Ishaan Khanna – MSc Biotechnology and Enterprise
“The uni always had so much to offer in terms of volunteering activities, different societies, super active student union, a state of the art library as well as a crazy nightlife.”
Parul Gupta – MSc Biotechnology and Enterprise
“For me the people were the highlight. We had a really close bunch of people and we all got on so well and had a great social network.”
Rachel Clapp - MRes Biological Sciences
