Firstly, congratulations to Michael McKenna, a second year Biochemistry student who was a member of the winning team for University Challenge 2012, beating more than 120 other Universities, who entered the competition. The team received their trophy from the Duchess of Cornwall, at a special presentation ceremony held at Clarence House to mark the 50th anniversary of the show. Look out for Michael’s interview that will soon be displayed on our website.
Research grants are essential to fund the groundbreaking research conducted within the Faculty. We have seen continuing success in securing research funding from the Research Councils, the EU, charities and industry to continue the pioneering research being conducted in Manchester. Recently, this has included funding for a number of independent Research Fellows to conduct major new research programmes in Manchester.
This year marks the centenary of the birth of Alan Turing, one of the leading thinkers of the 20th century. Best known as a pioneer in the development of the computer and for helping crack the Enigma code during World War II, Alan Turing also made a single contribution to biology. Members of our Faculty were actively involved in the opening of the Turing Exhibition, engaging the public with our “Body Experience” displays.
Our recruitment project for Professors and Lecturers is proving very successful, we are hoping to appoint in the near future and details of our new recruits will be published on our website. We are looking forward to welcoming new ideas and collaborations, to join our team of around 230 academic staff.
Planning has started for our Community Open Day, the next Open Day will be held on Saturday 30th June, within our Michael Smith Building… this year promises to be bigger and better than last year’s event and everyone is welcome, so make a note of the date!!
