Biology with Science and Society

What is Biology with Science and Society?

Biology with Science & Society offers students the opportunity to study biology within its historical, social, political and ethical context. Many recent scientific, technological and bio-medical topics – including genetic modification, stem cell and cloning research, the uses of DNA profiling and global environmentalism – have generated intense public debate. As students of Biology with Science & Society, you will use historical and related skills to explore the origins and development of these and other issues, and to consider how they impact upon and become a part of our contemporary culture. Modules offered within our course cover questions such as:

  • What role do the media play in communicating science and bio-medicine to the public?
  • How have perceptions and responses to disease changed over time?
  • What are the political, social and cultural implications of modern genetic research?
  • What is the influence of the scientific “expert” in fields such as forensics, bioethics and environmentalism, and how has this come to be?
Second year students

Second year students are seen here discussing issues related to science's role in society with Year 10 students.
