Developmental Biology

What is Developmental Biology?

Have you ever wondered how a single cell produced at fertilisation can produce a complete animal or plant, or why does the head always form where it does? Will we ever be able to make replacement parts for the human body? Can understanding development lead to novel treatments for cancer, IVF and congenital birth defects? Will we be able to make biofuels from plants without using up all our food? Would you like to know how new species of animals or plants evolve?

Intrigued? You will find the answers and more on our Developmental Biology course:

  • how the single cell produced at fertilisation grows and divides to produce the many cells of the final animal or plant,
  • how these cells become different to one another and
  • how these cells are positioned to form tissues and organs.
