Pharmacology

Can we interest you in some drugs?

Although The University of Manchester would never encourage its students to do anything illegal, we certainly would like you to learn more about medicines, toxins and yes, even recreational drugs, by joining our BSc (Hons) Pharmacology course. Pharmacology is the study of how drugs interact with the body – where they act, what they do, how they are metabolised, and how they exert toxic effects. Understanding all of this requires studying drug actions at levels ranging from the single molecule to the whole organism so pharmacology is a very broad discipline, taking in aspects of molecular biology, chemistry, physiology and neuroscience.

In Britain drugs are big business. In fact, 25% of the world’s top medicines were developed in the UK. In 2003 this translated into the pharmaceutical industry spending £3.2 billion on UK research and development, and employing around 73000 people. A further 250000 people work in related industries so all this adds up to a whole lot of career opportunities.

So, if you want to be part of Britain’s fascinating “drug-subculture” sign-up for pharmacology in Manchester today!
